When Whisper Pumps delivered its first farm pumping kits in 1994, no one could have guessed some would still be running 30 years later. Mark, our General Manager who’s been here since the start says:
“When we first started supplying these pumps back in the ’90s, we aimed to make life on the farm easier. Thirty years later, seeing them still running strong is proof that simple, reliable engineering really does stand the test of time”.
One of our early flagship products was a dirty water sewage pumping station, supplied as a complete kit with pumps, controls, and pipework. Farmers valued the all-in-one package as it made installation straightforward and ensured reliable performance from day one.

About six years ago, one of our customers, Tony from Brookfield Farm in Derbyshire popped into the trade counter with that very same pump. After a few issues, we refurbished the pump station with a new pump body, bearing in mind the original pump was 25 years old, that’s impressive longevity! Fast forward to just last week, and he returned with the same pump, this time for a new float switch, a simple £40 wear-and-tear item. Our pump engineer, Harrison, rewired the new float switch, and the pump was ready to go again. Even after 30 years, the fundamentals of the kit are still the same. It’s a true testament to the durability and smart design of the original package.

I was keen to hear from Tony about how he’s been using the pump on his farm. He explained that back in the ’90s he installed a 5000-gallon holding tank to catch overflow from his septic system. The packaged pump station was then installed to move this water into the fields for irrigation. Because the water is nutrient-rich, Tony says it works brilliantly as a natural fertiliser, keeping his crops healthy and the soil thriving.
Tony also built a shed with a concrete floor to house the tank and pump station. That extra protection from the elements has no doubt played a big part in the pump’s impressive lifespan.
After 30 years, Tony’s pump is still going strong, proof that simple, well-designed engineering, regular maintenance, and a little protection from the elements can keep farm equipment performing reliably for decades.
